For ten years, I navigated the challenging terrain of chronic illness, wrestling with an autoimmune diagnosis and persistent inflammation. Leaving no stone unturned, I tried almost every healing modality and diet there was, but the inflammation would inevitably return. Like many others on this path, I desperately searched for the root cause, trying everything from conventional treatments to alternative approaches.
What I witnessed through this decade-long journey transformed my understanding of healing forever. I watched in awe as my stuck arm healed overnight when I finally took courageous steps, reduced the toxicity in my life, and embraced self-love. I saw my inflamed eye disappear completely when I chose to say yes to myself. My chronic knee inflammation began to dissipate as I addressed long-held emotions and trauma. These weren’t coincidences – they were powerful demonstrations of our body’s remarkable ability to heal when we align our patterns, thoughts, lifestyle, and environment to support wellness.
Healing isn’t just about finding a single root cause – it’s about returning to harmony with ourselves and the natural world. It’s about understanding that our bodies, minds, and environments are intricately connected, and that lasting wellness requires addressing all these aspects together. This is the blueprint for healing that emerged from my journey.
The 12 Layers of Healing
1. Connecting with Your Body
Our bodies have a masculine side (right) representing action and doing, and a feminine side (left) embodying trust and receiving, with each body part carrying its own symbolic message. Many of us disconnect from our bodies as a protective mechanism, especially following trauma, but healing begins when we learn to listen to our body’s wisdom rather than fear it. Understanding these messages and rebuilding trust with your body becomes the foundation for all healing work.
2. Healthy Food and Water Choices
Through my healing journey, I discovered it wasn’t just about what we eat, but also about reducing exposure to the “three P’s” – packaging, processing, and preservatives. The importance of clean, spring water became clear as I witnessed its impact not only on my own health but also on my dog’s wellbeing. Making conscious choices about our food and water isn’t about following a specific diet, but rather about reducing our overall toxic load and choosing nourishment that truly serves our wellbeing.
3. Clean Your House
Our home environment profoundly impacts our healing, with every space either draining or sustaining our energy. Creating a healing sanctuary involves removing toxic products, decluttering spaces, and organizing your environment with intention – even the direction your clothes face in your closet can symbolize whether you’re living in the past or moving toward the future. Your living space should nurture and support your journey, from the cleaning products you use to the crystals and plants you incorporate.
4. Your Words and Thoughts Matter
The language we use about our health and our bodies can either support or hinder our healing journey. Words and thoughts carry energy that directly impacts our physical wellbeing, as demonstrated by studies showing their effects on water crystals and plant growth. Learning to transform limiting beliefs and negative self-talk into supportive patterns becomes a crucial part of the healing process.
5. Getting Organized
When dealing with chronic health challenges, staying organized becomes essential for progress and peace of mind. Creating systems to track your healing journey, from managing health information to developing sustainable routines, helps reduce stress and creates clarity in what can often feel overwhelming. Good organization allows you to make informed decisions about your health while maintaining a sense of control and direction.
6. Keeping the Body’s Pathways Clear and Moving
Like a river needs to flow freely, our bodies need clear pathways to maintain health and vitality. Supporting our natural detoxification systems and ensuring proper circulation becomes essential for healing, while understanding that emotional stagnation can create physical blockages. This layer focuses on movement, both physical and energetic, to support the body’s natural healing abilities.
7. Healthy Morning and Evening Routines
Creating supportive daily rhythms that align with nature’s cycles can dramatically impact our wellbeing. From morning light exposure to evening wind-down practices, these routines help regulate our nervous system and support natural healing processes. Developing sacred bookends to your day provides a foundation for deep rest and sustained energy.
8. Building Safety, Trust, and Letting Go
Healing often requires us to address deep patterns and past traumas that keep us stuck in illness. Building a foundation of inner safety while releasing old patterns becomes essential for true healing. This layer helps us recognize and release what no longer serves us while developing trust in our body’s innate ability to heal.
9. Choose Yourself and Take Courageous Steps
Sometimes healing requires brave choices and putting ourselves first, which can mean making significant life changes. Learning to set healthy boundaries and make empowered choices becomes crucial for sustained wellness. This layer encourages us to make decisions that honor our health, even when they challenge our familiar patterns or others’ expectations.
10. Find Your Purpose and Follow Your Passion
Having a sense of purpose becomes a powerful catalyst for healing and resilience. This layer helps us discover and pursue what brings us joy and meaning, understanding that alignment with our authentic nature supports our overall wellbeing. When we connect with our deeper mission, it guides not just our healing but our entire life path.
11. Self-Love and Filling Your Cup
Self-care isn’t a luxury – it’s essential for healing and must be prioritized as part of daily life. This layer teaches us to create sustainable practices that honor all aspects of our being, physical, emotional, and spiritual. Learning to nurture ourselves deeply becomes the foundation for lasting health and vitality.
12. The Healing Elements of Nature
Our connection to the natural world provides profound support for healing at every level. Understanding how elements like water, earth, air, and sunlight support our wellbeing helps us create harmony between our inner and outer environments. This final layer reminds us that we are part of nature, not separate from it, and that reconnecting with natural elements provides essential support for healing.
Embracing the Journey
What I learned was that our bodies are always trying to help, communicate, and show us the way – and are never attacking us. They may be showing us where we need to grow, where courageous changes may be needed, or where there are lessons to be learned. We need to believe that the internal is healing just as though a cut on the outside is healing, and most of all we need to look at our body holistically and interconnected with our environment, for healing.
These 12 layers work together, supporting and strengthening each other. When we address them all, we create an environment where genuine healing can flourish. Remember, this journey is unique for each person. You don’t need to perfect all these layers at once. Start where you are, with what resonates most deeply, and allow your understanding to grow naturally.
Layer by layer you can return to your authentic, loving, connected and balanced self, and bring healing into your daily life, patterns and environment.
